so I am posting from my brother's rental car. normally I am driving and can't get online so I had to try it while I had the chance :) happy new year everyone!!!

this time instead of bothering with the airplane wifi which was lame last time I tried it (and my brother in law had the same lame wifi experience on their galaxy tab) I put one of my movies on a thumb drive... it was really nice. and of course using my chromebook everywhere I've gone in tempe/mesa is heavenly. thanks again and again google. :)
but one little tiny thing I noticed. my clock is still on seattle time.. since it has a 3g radio and the gps works these days, it seems silly not to have the clock update to the new time zone.
my flixster app updated to where I am and showed me the right theatres but the clock didn't update?
ah well... loving it anyway hehe
happy holidays from sunny arizona :)

coming soon to a chrome browser and chromebook near you.... the new google toolbar... looks really nice... the black bar on the left is a drop down so only visible if you click the google icon... much better than the black bar....
if it's not showing up yet and you  want to hack it check this out
enjoy!
I have just one question. how do I get google currents on my chromebook?
I put  this on my EVO and I love it... I want to see it on my chromebook.. this is really well done!

3G? what do you think?

in the chromebook central group the discussion of what we would pay for unlimited 3G came up. and it got me thinking about if I would pay for 3G for the chromebook or not. the more I think about it the more likely I think it is that I would.
Ever since I got my chromebook my use of my Evo phone has dropped considerably. I do occasionally use it for real quick look ups and much more often as a hotspot for the chromebook. the rare occasion when I use the 100MG free 3G on the chromebook is really nice. it just disappears too fast. i have tested a couple 24hour free passes and I loved it. I've noticed in restaurants often the verizon 3G is faster than the unsecure wifi they have. of course I've only gotten the pass a couple times so it's nothing conclusive and I'm beginning to think I may have a wifi issue on unsecure networks. but the thing is. I like it when I use the Evo hotspot in public or in the car when someone else is driving. and since I don't use the phone much anymore I would think about removing it from the phone and paying for it on the chromebook instead if the price was right. because it's so much easier. it makes so much more sense since this is my main access to the net on the road... heck it's my main access from home too. I just absolutely love it. it's my main computer. period. this is my two cents worth. anyone beg to differ?

ipads vs chromebooks in the school

a wonderful article that really shows why I like chromebook over Ipad... enjoy

Saturday, November 5, 2011

another reason to love my chromebook... we were trying to find a bank and the flash wouldn't scroll properly on my android phone so I pulled out chromebook, signing onto 3G and quickly found the branch we were looking for, threw it back in my purse and we were on our way again. less than a minute... worked great!!!

a nice article talking about an upgrade to the power of the samsung... rock it google!

There are several Google Chromebooks on the market right now and they rock netbook spec hardware on the inside. The processor is the Intel Atom N570 and I think most will agree that if you want to do more serious computing on the machines you need a faster processor than that Atom part. Google and Intel are set to put more powerful hardware under the hood of Chromebooks soon according to sources.
DigiTimes reports that Google and Intel will start to offer the Chromebooks with mainstream Core i processors. Sources in the notebook industry claim that Intel is giving a 10-20% discount on the new processors that will be used in Chromebooks. The added performance might capture the attention of enthusiasts that were bothered by having to pay up to $100 more than a competing Windows 7 notebook with more performance.
Google will also apparently help the Chromebook making computer firms with marketing and will target a price range above $500 for the machines using the new processors. I don’t think tossing a faster processor under the hood is the complete answer to more sales for Chromebooks. I think Chromebooks will have to add more performance with the new processor and will need to beat the price of competing Windows machines to be successful on the notebook market.

saw this blurb about google donating 600 chromebooks to vets... good to see.
latest dev update seems really nice so far. sitting in my dr's office right now using it. it feels clean and efficient for want of better words. only one issue so far. the cursor has been jumping around more on this than I've seen in a very long time. and the exit full screen mode floating icon suddenly looks cheap and unfinished again. I think the  floating bookmark bar that is on the tab page should drop down instead of the exit full screen icon... it could have an exit button on it. but video is looking great and it's cruising along quite nicely. maybe stable version will make a jump forward in the near future. one can hope. :)

well everything I've been hearing about the latest dev is that it's fast. I like fast. and though I haven't actually been using it enough lately, the latest dev hasn't been crashing my cr48 so I am getting back off beta on my samsung and downloading the latest dev again. yippee... heheh I will let you know what I think once I've buzzed around on it...

I have decided today is a good day for a rant. everyone thinks apple has soul and steve jobs was jesus reborn. but Apple is exactly what is wrong with the modern world. first off, although they make beautiful machines they have complete and total control over what you can do with their machines. do you want something apple doesn't like? too bad. Big brother apple knows better than you. do you actually care about the quality of life of the human beings making your products? apple doesn't care. they exploit like crazy. now, I am not saying that no other company does the same thing... really it's endemic to the technology industry. but apple has everyone thinking they're the good guys and they aren't. all they care about is making money. they have no ethics. I saw a joke once. showing how bill gates is doing all this charity work and giving away most of his money to make a better world... but steve jobs is the icon of goodness even though he does nothing at all. he wasn't one of the billionaires giving away lots of money to various charities. so now steve jobs is dissing microsoft and google for "not getting it" but i've seen the new windows phone and it's really nice. I have been thinking lately I would like to get one. and there's a reason android is doing so well. they're really nice phones. in a way Iphone/android is microsoft/apple all over again. apple kept total control and almost killed apple. microsoft licensed software and grew faster and faster and the only reason apple made it through the hard times was because miscrosoft allowed their products to be designed for mac computers. and what is android doing to grow like crazy? letting everyone put their software on everything... tada... android grows faster and faster and apple slowly stagnates. Unless they find the next big thing yet again, they will fall back into being a niche product again. it will take tme but it is already starting to happen. and guess what? windows phones will keep growing and so will android. windows very slowly, but they can afford to grow slowly. android i am not sure about but grow they will.

But this is a blog about chrome so why the rant? because all the hype about st jobs is kind of annoying. he is a guy, nothing more. smart? yes. manage do some interesting things? yes, but still a ceo of a major corporation out to make lots of money. and it annoys me that he thinks his ideas are the only right ideas and no one else gets it. this sounds an awful lot like religions or politics. the only we all have in common is we think everyone else is wrong. well I don't like it in my spirituality and I don't like it in my politics and I don't like it in my tech. open should actually be open. the more the merrier. billions of ideas .... because no one has the corner on the market. not any market.
you see I think google does get it. they've made a few missteps here and there. so did microsoft and so did apple. but with google search, android and google plus google is really getting it right and it has soul. lots of soul. the samsung chromebook is a sweet little machine and works really well. for me it's what I thought apple should have been. I love it and carry it with me everywhere. what's more everything on it works. and if we see changes to be made, google listens. they find unique ways to make it work. and android ice cream sandwich? what little I've seen of it seems to me that it just keeps getting better and better. are they saints? no, probably heck no.
apple's late ceo was angry because he was scared. and he should be. dang it. he should be. so in this pic I am watching torchwood on my ss5 with an external monitor hooked up... underneath it are 2 windows computers; one for work and one for personal use. which one I am using? my chromebook. thanks google!

well, not a place I really  want to be but I sure am glad I can have my chromebook in here!! much better than having to watch tv... oy ve :) I watched the new tv show Pan Am on hulu which I am loving and Dr Who season 6 on amazon prime....this is a real lifesaver for me to have my chromebook in the hospital with me. yay!!
believe it or not I tripped over a tree stump at the old house on swinomish rez and cut my wrist in the fall and it got seriously infected. and after such a nice evening being prayed for at the indian shaker church in concrete ... sheesh. lol

oh massey kwi ha ha ha ha shucksiab. :)

so I found my first place where my chromebook didn't work at all. not on 3G not on wifi , not through my EVO , not at all.. it was weirder than being on an airplane. we were in tahola, a reservation on the ocean about 45 minutes north of kurt cobain's birth home of aberdeen wa. there was no verizon and no sprint. I suspect att would not be there either. no one's cell phone worked there at all. it is a gorgeous place right on the ocean. we had fish soup made of salmon, salmon eggs and potatoes, razor clams and other staples of the local traditional foods. but no cell phones, no chromebook, no nothing... we actually had to turn our cell's off because the constant searching for a cell signal would kill our batteries very quickly. well. the joy of offline and the bane of offline were both VERY apparent let me tell you. luckily I was there for other reasons and I was so busy in the real world that I certainly didn't mind but it was the first time since I got my CR48 in january that for all practical purposes other than reading my book or playing a few games I really couldn't use my chromebook. of course if you think about it, going for close to 9 months and spending lots of time in some very rural areas and this is the first time the chromebook failed me, well that really is pretty impressive. but if I had been there for any length of time it definitely would have failed me, unless I found someone on the rez with wifi which I am sure I would have without much difficulty people are always so nice there... but it was worth the tradeoff. you have no idea how wonderful traditionally fixed seafood can be. of course I haven't had to eat fish heads yet... not sure about that one. hehe

for all those naysayers who say no connection means a brick. here's a picture at the restaurant this evening. I was reading my book on my chrome OS kindle app. I could have turned on my evo hot spot but chose not to bother since I was really enjoying my book. sadly for some reason the kindle app doesn't seem to show up on my evo camera... but trust me I was readding. . .
brick. muyahahahaha.... NOT

Thought I would post a couple pics of the chrome OS on the big screen. hard to tell from a phone camera but it looks really nice.. kind of like the chrome browser in full screen mode. a breeze to use this way too. can't wait for the chrome box to come out.
so for me, the only thing better than having a chromebook is having 2 chromebooks! so I hooked a monitor to my cr48. here's a picture of my room. the Samsung on the table by my bed and the cr48 with the monitor . I am watching , but wait, maybe I should let you all guess what I 'm watching ... hehe... the picture quality is excellent. netflix streaming is working great. my techie life is doing great. hehe... now about that love life. hmmm......

update! I was wrong!

update! my biggest complaint which was about signing in with the google account isn't really an issue after all. it only needs the connection the first time to set everything up... the next 2 times I signed off and back it worked just like it should allowing offline use... whew!!! it had me worried!

latest dev build - 15.0.874.12

Google Chrome 15.0.874.12
Platform 1011.11 (Official Build) dev-channel x86-alex
Firmware Alex.03.61.0735.0056G3.0021

ok, first the good things.
1) figured out a way to move apps from page to page; drag them down to the bottom bar to the page you want it on. it will move to the correct page and let you place the app. it will even create a page if that's what you need.
2) seems to be faster and smoother all the way around. I am liking that a lot.
3) ctrl + and ctrl - work correctly again. the icons shrink but the background stays put... sweet. wish I could make it different from page though... so the most visited icons can be large, the app icons small and the bookmark icons in between somewhere. just something I noticed.

now the bad
1) too dang much white on the splash screen and log in screen. I don't like it at all. I want my dark screen back.. at the very least give us the option.
2) it forces you to sign on with your google account. which totally undermines offline use. stupid, stupid, stupid. I even turned off my wifi just to try it and guess what? I couldn't sign on at all... even to get to the offline apps. they better get this fixed and pronto!!!
3) on the bookmarks there is no obvious way to change which bookmarks are displayed. I tried and tried and couldn't change which bookmarks that were seen at all. I would really like this option. at the very least show the folders so you can click on the folders to see other bookmarks.

so there you are. my quick and dirty opinion of the updates. smooth and stable but a couple big issues that need to be fixed quickly...

I am going to post a screenshot of my start page because I love the latest them that I found... enjoy

latest dev build

Well I uploaded the latest dev build to my CR48 this evening and was liking it enough to put it on my Samsung Chromebook.
the look and feel is sweet. the video seems sharper to me. the battery seems a lot better though really won't get the chance to try it out for real until tomorrow on the latest build. They have finally gotten most (though not all) of the bugs out of the new start page and I am really liking now. I have added screenshots. it is still difficult to move icons from one page to another and I really don't like the white splash screen. I do like the little animation but they could have done a similar animation with a black screen and light colored lettering... the white makes it look unfinished, like a first draft. ugh. their theme lately is pushing a lot empty white space and it's getting a bit much for my tastes. you can make things too simplistic looking methinks.
I think the bookmarks needs work too. the bookmark icons are really tacky looking, the icons should be larger, like apps. I realize the blank space would normally be filled with the title of the bookmarks but as you see in the screenshot I removed the titles because the icons work a lot better. that should be exploited in the page design.
also the most visited should be a little larger in my opinion.
still I am loving the look and feel more and more as time goes on..

loving the battery life

so last night I went to sleep with amazon cloud playing a nice cd to go to sleep to. in the morning I woke to find I had forgotten to plug in the charger. the charge was below 20%. I plugged in the charger and half an hour I was at 71% when I unplugged it and went to work. I watched Daria at lunch. and I've watched cnettv, and several you tube videos, another daria episode, did email, checked facebook, just watched covert affairs on hulu and it's now 9:29pm in the evening and I still have 35% charge. I woke up at 6:20am but didn't notice until breakfast so I didn't plug it in until 7:10am and I took it off the charger at 7:45am. so I started with 71% at 7:45am and I still have 35% charge at 9:30pm. that's pretty awesome I must say...

why?

you may be wondering why I am posting all this stuff on my chrome blog?
for me, who is a computer user and not a developer, the chrome book is all about what I can do with it. I was able to keep up my blog, entertain myself on the flight, share my pictures from the gathering with friends and family. I unplugged it in the morning and carried it with me all day long. I used it to listen to music at night to help me go to sleep. my chromebook goes everywhere with me. I didn't have to charge it at all except at night when I was sleeping. it is my calendar, my entertainment, my bank, my social network. with this I can carry everything I need everywhere. its easier to use and easier to see than my smartphone. and plenty powerful for all my needs. I printed my boarding pass with it on my friend's computer. when I was sitting in the airport people had their laptops and they were huge compared to my samsung. and they had to find a place to sit where they could plug it in so they could conserve their battery for the flight. i wasn't the least bit worried about using up my battery. this is why I posted my trip this weekend. to show that with the chromebook I lived my life, my life wasn't my chromebook

naming ceremony

my friend Kathy was receiving the name si tall te lia. this name means watches over the people. johnny's great grandmother was a young medicine woman when small pox was decimating the people and she spent her time singing, praying and encouraging the people to have faith that it won't always be like it was at the time. that the people would survive and the plague would end... she helped so many people that she earned the name, si tall te lia for encouraging and watching over the people during such a difficult time. what a powerful name! we had great food and great songs and wonderful gifts at the potlatch to honor the name. what a joy. I wasn't able to get pictures of the actual ceremony because I was participating. so mostly pics of her family and the dinner and potlatch.

sunday morning hanging out with my chromebook

I wanted to get a picture of where we are in the sierras... it's so beautiful here at their home. such a joy. so carri was saying they probably went more like 60 feet into the tree to set up the antenna for clearwire because the branches start at 40 feet. it's so relaxing.. they built their home themselves and make their living making and selling jewelry. beautiful and expensive jewelry I might add!!

potlatch and circle in grass valley

so I didn't use my computer during the gathering of course, but once the video and pics were loaded up to picasa , my chromebook is used for everything else. so I won't bother with too much detail on who everyone is.. but this a NW coast style gathering (open to all of course) with a potlatch and song and prayer circle. today will be the naming ceremony which is the main reason we are here in california this weekend. enjoy the pics... fyi, the man in the right of the top pic is johnny moses, my friend we bought the acer wifi chromebook for. he loves it! just as an aside, my friends jeremy and carri live out in the sierra foothills and the only way they could internet was to have clearwire come out and climb 40 feet into their trees and set up a line of sight dish to their tower.. it works pretty good though it's affected by the weather. so sometimes is mega slow

Saturday, September 3, 2011

breakfast at kathy's what a weird night . bizarre dreams... sheesh but doing a lot better this morning. feel like myself again. yay!!! here's pics of the breakfast club as we get ready for the day's events. kathy, scott and I with our red cedar circle t-shirts and kapua. going to be a good day.. oh and me with my chromebook updating my blog.. I love my chromebook... wendi the chromie! hehe

relaxing at my friend kathy's house

so we're relaxing after the flight at kathy's house. I thought the flash would do a better job .. you can barely see my chromebook in my laptop.. that is kathy with me. kapua is sitting next to me but you can't really see him at all... well time to go to bed hehe.

sunset from the plane as it took off

well the good news is offline stuff worked great on the plane. it was a pretty short flight so mostly I just read my book on the kindle app. it worked great. I decided to use my phone for music because it already had a bunch of music stored locally so it was easier than bothering to put music on the laptop. the bad news is since the plane wifi was inexpensive I wanted to try it out and I couldn't get the website to accept my credit card. I put the info in and hit send it would say processing but then it would just bring me back to the same page with all info deleted . I closed tabs and I even rebooted but it wouldn't accept the card. not sure if it was their website or the computer. maybe it was trying to download something to the computer... but it doesn't make sense because I've used sites like that before mostly amazon, but occasionally other sites as well.
but kindle worked great and was nice to read my book ... I really enjoyed it. I am going to try again with the wifi on the way home. here's a couple moon and sunset pics I took as the plane took off. it's a camera phone so it's not as nice I'd like... but still they're pretty... enjoy

sitting in the airport

took a little bit to connect to the airport wifi , but no it's working great.... been unplugged since 7am and I still have about 80% battery. that includes watching a half hour show on hulu at lunchtime... a few emails , posting on the blog and facebook and google plus... plenty of battery for the trip. yay!!! I have about an hour to kill before they board. sweet. now if only my body worked half as well , hehe.

after work, hanging out my friend's house

will be leaving for the airport soon... hanging out on my friend's couch before heading to the airport. right now I am connected to verizon 3g with 87mgs left... yay!!

traveling to california this weekend

I am going to log my chromebook trip. hehe... starting with breakfast this morning on my way to work at ihop... right now I am connected to my evo 4g hotspot through wifi.. I have plenty of 4g signal.... fast enough to watch a couple videos on phonedog.com this morning.... great way to start the morning... :)
of course I have already run into a snag. I bought a digital movie on amazon and can only download it to a pc or mac. how do I find a pc before my flight to download the movie onto a flash drive? they really have to fix this...

gmail , docs and calendar offline... go team

we are so happy to hear about this! and just before I leave on my trip to california.
yay!

Thank You Google

I hear a lot of talk about prices and speed and other things. I may not answer this with arguments to refute the hardware or software options. Rather I want to say thank you to google. the last year has been a struggle for me. I've gotten diagnosed with several health issues about a year ago and taking care of them has put a bit of a pinch on the old budget you might say. my windows laptop was dying and I couldn't afford to buy a new one anyway. I have a nice work computer with two monitors but I can only use them for work and they them locked up tight as IS departments are wont to do. perhaps I could hack it, but it's really not my style. when the cr48 showed up on my doorstep back near the end january, I quite honestly said out loud without thinking, "what is this? has my luck actually changed for the better for once?" and imagine my joy to find out not only that I had a free laptop but I actually enjoyed using it! I hadn't enjoyed windows since I had been a beta tester for MSN back when it was still in beta. let's just say that was when y2k was actually a scary prospect to most companies. hehe.

yeah I had a few crashes and a few bugs and before long I had jumped to dev channel even though I had absolutely no reason to, since I am not a developer. but it was fun to use. I carried it everywhere. and used it all the time. I loved posting on the board and really enjoyed the vibrant crew of testers we had here at the chat. I hadn't really enjoy bbs's like this in years.

let me tell you, I was shocked when melissa sent me an email about a samsung 5 and even more shocked when it showed up at work 2 days later. it was fun to open and videotape and I have been on it almost exclusively since then. and I was frustrated when my windows laptop finally gave up the ghost and I couldn't watch netflix anymore... yet it was 2 weeks later that netflix appeared.

today I was in the emergency yet again. and I had my chromebook with me. I was very happy to have it with me even though I never really had the need to use it. but for a while there it looked like I might be there for the night and I was prepared. in some ways chrome has kept me going during some difficult times over the last year. and I really appreciate it greatly.

so maybe the S5 isn't the fasted computer out there. I wouldn't actually know. and maybe there are still bugs to fix here and there. what I do know is that this has done everything I need it to. helped me keep in touch with friends through email and gtalk and facebook and google plus.. write essays and papers and poetry. be here in this forum and entertain me when I didn't have enough strength to get out of bed.
would I buy an S5 if I hadn't been lucky enough to get one through the guru program? probably not. but not because it's not worth it. because if I had the money I would buy one in a heartbeat. with no reservations at all. and I did pitch in to help a group of us buy an acer chromebook for a good friend on disability who needed a computer. and he loves it and uses it ALL the time. maybe even more than I do. he is native and he has found videos of many of his elders on you tube sharing teachings about the songs and the culture, the language and the herbal medicines. he has people he can hear speaking his language and inspiring others to bring their birth language back from extinction. and just to hear the language when he has no one else to talk to.

can other computers do this? yes they can. but what I see with google is people having fun doing what they love. people who actually care about the products they're creating. I mean I never saw this when I wandered the halls of microsoft with my ex boyfriend. I have seen with this macs though for whatever reason I've never been to into apple products. but I feel it here in google. and I love the chromeOS and I got excited all over again when I heard Trond talking about ideas of things to come.

so this is what I say to people who are always complaining. not about the bugs, because of course we all need to complain about them that's why we're here after all.. but complaining about it not being the perfect computer.
why are you here? are you here to be a part of something and watch things grow from infancy to maturity? cuz that's why we're here! so revel in it. all of it... the great, the good, the bad , and the ugly!
I have heard that others have had a hard time here as well. so I know I am not the only one.

so really, I don't care about the processor or the ram or any of it. I turn the computer and it's up and running and letting me do what I want to do and need to do right away. when I called work to let them know what was going on I was able to sign on to work's webmail and see that the everyone knew and had figured out what to do without me there. when I got home and couldn't do anything except lay there, I was able to sign onto netflix and watch a wonderful irish movie called "a shine of rainbows" and feel a little better.
when I was at the swinomish reservation when all the canoes from all over the NW landed and all the tribes shared their songs and dances for everyone I was able to post my pics on google plus and facebook to share with all my friends. it works. and it is always with me. that's all I need.

so thank you google.. for making a very difficult year a whole lot easier to deal with.

Seattle meetup of Google and chromies

so we had a fun meet up with Trond from the Google Chrome Team and the some of the washington and portland Chromies... it was a lot of fun... we talked about things we liked and things we'd like to see. I wish I'd taken notes. so I could remember everything. After listening to Trond talk about hopes and aspirations for ChromeOS I really understand that it really is in it's infancy... I am so excited to see how it grows. hope this happens more often... thanks guys..
so let's see how I do names..
